Dubai Driver Arrested, Fined Dh50,000 for Reckless Driving on Road Shoulder

A young driver in Dubai has been arrested after a video showed him speeding on the road shoulder and risking lives. Dubai Police fined him Dh50,000 under strict traffic laws and urged the public to report such dangerous behaviours to help keep roads safe.

Dubai:Dubai Police have arrested a young Asian driver after a viral video showed him overtaking vehicles dangerously on the road shoulder at high speed, putting his life and the lives of other road users at serious risk. The reckless driver now faces a fine of Dh50,000 to release his impounded vehicle, under Decree No. 30 of 2023.

Dangerous Driving Captured on Video

The incident came to light after traffic patrol teams reviewed a video that circulated on social media, showing the driver speeding and overtaking cars on the road shoulder. According to Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, the footage clearly showed the driver operating his vehicle in an unsafe and irresponsible manner.

Al Mazrouei condemned such actions, describing them as a clear violation of traffic laws and a direct threat to road safety. “These dangerous behaviours reflect disregard for human life and public safety,” he stated.

He also warned that sharing videos of reckless driving online encourages others, especially young drivers and teenagers, to imitate these behaviours. “Disseminating such content undermines our collective efforts to promote a culture of traffic safety,” Al Mazrouei said, adding that it can influence those unaware of the serious risks to engage in similar acts.

Swift Police Action and Legal Consequences

Following the investigation, Dubai Police quickly identified and apprehended the driver. The suspect was referred to the relevant authorities for further legal proceedings. Under Decree No. 30 of 2023, the driver was fined Dh50,000 to release his impounded vehicle.

Al Mazrouei stressed that driving on the shoulder at excessive speeds is a serious offence with severe consequences. “Statistics show that such behaviours have contributed to severe accidents, leading to deaths and serious injuries,” he noted. According to police data, nearly 80 per cent of drivers caught engaging in such violations have previously been involved in serious traffic incidents.

The police chief assured the public that authorities would not tolerate reckless driving and other violations that endanger lives. “The safety of road users is our highest priority,” Al Mazrouei said. “We will continue to take strict action against those who break the law.”

Community’s Role in Promoting Road Safety

Al Mazrouei called on residents to play an active part in keeping Dubai’s roads safe. He urged the public to report dangerous driving behaviours using the “Police Eye” feature on the Dubai Police app or by calling the “We Are All Police” hotline at 901.

“Fostering a safe traffic environment is a shared responsibility that requires cooperation between the public and law enforcement,” he explained. Sharing videos of reckless driving is not only harmful but can also motivate copycat behaviour, making roads even more dangerous.

Dubai Police also rely on advanced monitoring technologies and intelligent systems to detect violators and maintain safety on the roads 24/7. Al Mazrouei emphasised that such tools, combined with public cooperation, help the police respond quickly to violations and reduce traffic accidents.

The police have consistently highlighted the dangers of speeding, driving on the road shoulder, and other forms of reckless driving. These actions can result in tragic consequences, including fatal accidents and life-changing injuries.

In closing, Al Mazrouei reaffirmed Dubai Police’s commitment to protecting every road user. “We urge drivers to respect traffic laws and prioritise the safety of themselves and others,” he said. “Together, through responsible driving and community vigilance, we can build safer roads for everyone in Dubai.”
