Dubai: Dubai Police showcased its latest technological innovation, the Biometric Tunnel, at GITEX Global 2025, held at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Developed by Dubiometrics, the tunnel uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyse an individual’s walking pattern, known as gait, to create a unique motion fingerprint for identification purposes.
How the Biometric Tunnel Works
Lt. Col. Dr. Hamad Mansour Al Awr, project director, explained that the Biometric Tunnel captures a person’s motion fingerprint in just five seconds. The system records detailed movements, including joint motion, walking rhythm, and specific traits such as the influence of flat feet. By analysing these features, the tunnel generates a precise motion signature unique to each individual.
The system integrates motion biometrics with other identifiers like facial recognition, ear measurements, and body metrics. This combination provides robust evidence for forensic investigations, particularly in situations where conventional identification methods are not feasible.
Supporting Forensic Investigations
Dr. Al Awr highlighted that the Biometric Tunnel is currently in its research and development phase. However, it already shows significant potential in aiding forensic experts. By capturing and analysing walking patterns and body movements, the tunnel helps identify individuals more accurately, offering valuable evidence that strengthens police investigations and supports the justice system.
“This innovative system is part of Dubai Police’s broader commitment to leveraging technology to enhance public safety and law enforcement capabilities,” he added.
Advantages of Motion Biometrics
Unlike traditional biometric methods, such as fingerprints or facial recognition, motion biometrics can identify individuals even if other physical identifiers are unavailable or compromised. The Biometric Tunnel can analyse gait even in challenging conditions, making it a powerful tool for investigations in crowded or high-security areas.
Additionally, the AI-powered system continuously learns and improves its accuracy over time, ensuring that it adapts to new movement patterns or variations in walking styles. This feature enhances its reliability and positions it as a next-generation solution in forensic science.
Future Prospects
Dubai Police plans to further develop the Biometric Tunnel and expand its applications across various security and law enforcement domains. The project reflects Dubai’s ongoing emphasis on innovation and the adoption of advanced technologies to improve safety and security for residents and visitors alike.
As the Biometric Tunnel continues to advance, it is expected to complement existing identification systems, providing an additional layer of verification for criminal investigations, border security, and other law enforcement operations.
