India strongly condemns Trump’s controversial “hellhole” remarks, as political leaders and Indian American communities warn of potential damage to US-India relations.
A fresh controversy has erupted between India and the United States after Donald Trump made derogatory remarks about India, triggering sharp criticism from New Delhi, Indian American lawmakers, and community leaders. The backlash threatens to strain relations between the two nations at a time when diplomatic engagement is crucial.
The row began when Trump reshared a social media post criticizing birthright citizenship in the United States. The post referred to countries such as India as “hellholes” and included disparaging claims about Indian immigrants working in the technology sector.
“A baby here becomes an instant citizen, and then they bring the entire family in from China or India or some other hellhole on the planet,” the post said.
The message also alleged that Indian immigrants in the tech industry fail to hire native-born Americans and inaccurately claimed that they lack English proficiency, drawing widespread condemnation.

India’s government responded swiftly and firmly, rejecting the remarks as baseless and offensive. Officials emphasized that such statements do not reflect the longstanding partnership between the two countries.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the comments as “obviously uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste.”
“They certainly do not reflect the reality of the India-US relationship, which has long been based on mutual respect and shared interests,” he said.
The timing of the controversy is particularly sensitive, as Marco Rubio is expected to visit India next month. The visit is aimed at easing tensions and strengthening bilateral cooperation, making the current dispute an unwelcome complication.
The backlash has been especially intense among Indian American lawmakers and community figures, many of whom have spoken out against Trump’s remarks.
Congressman Ami Bera, one of the longest-serving Indian American members of Congress, condemned the statements while expressing pride in both his heritage and his country.
“President Trump, who was born into wealth and privilege, has never had to struggle the way so many immigrant families have,” he said.
Bera further added that the remarks were “offensive, ignorant, and beneath the dignity of the office he holds,” stressing that they reveal “a fundamental misunderstanding of who we are as a nation.”
“America has always been strengthened by generations of immigrants who come here, work hard, and contribute to our country. They do not weaken America - they strengthen it,” he said.
Similarly, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi criticised Trump’s decision to amplify the controversial message.
“His rhetoric doesn’t just insult millions of Indian Americans and one of our most important global partners, it undermines the values that have made America a nation of opportunity and innovation,” he said.
Advocacy groups and community leaders have also voiced concern that such rhetoric could have consequences beyond domestic politics, potentially affecting diplomatic and economic ties.
The Hindu American Foundation said it was disturbed by what it described as a “hateful, racist screed,” warning that “endorsing such rants as the president of the United States will further stoke hatred and endanger our communities.”
Ajay Bhutoria, a former adviser to a White House commission on Asian American issues, called the remarks “a dangerous and offensive distortion of reality” and urged that they be withdrawn.
He highlighted the significant contributions of Indian Americans across sectors such as innovation, entrepreneurship, and public service.
“Managers with laptops create jobs, fuel innovation, and contribute to massive economic growth. They are infinitely better for the future of this country than gangsters with guns who promote violence and instability,” he said.
Bhutoria also underlined the broader strategic implications, describing India as “a critical strategic ally” and warning that targeting the Indian diaspora could amount to “an economic and geopolitical blunder.”
Trump’s remarks mark a notable shift from the approach traditionally adopted by successive US administrations, which have generally worked to strengthen ties with India.
Over the past two decades, relations between Washington and New Delhi have deepened significantly. Cooperation between the two countries now spans defense, technology, and trade. Bilateral trade has surpassed $200 billion, and both nations increasingly view each other as key partners in addressing global challenges.
The Indian American community, though relatively small in population, plays a disproportionately large role in sectors such as technology, healthcare, and academia. It is widely regarded as one of the most highly educated and economically successful communities in the United States.
Immigration has long been a central theme in Trump’s political agenda. His policies have included tightening visa regulations frequently used by Indian technology professionals and imposing tariffs on India amid broader trade disputes.
His latest remarks appear to reflect these policy positions, but critics argue that the tone and language used risk damaging not only domestic social cohesion but also international relationships.
The controversy highlights the delicate balance between domestic political messaging and foreign policy priorities. As the United States navigates a rapidly evolving global landscape, maintaining strong partnerships, particularly with key allies like India, remains crucial.
With diplomatic efforts ongoing and high-level visits on the horizon, both countries may need to work carefully to ensure that such incidents do not derail broader cooperation.
