In a major relief for expatriates, the United Arab Emirates has allowed residents stranded abroad with expired visas to return home without the usual re-entry requirements. The move comes as part of emergency measures to ease travel difficulties caused by ongoing regional disruptions.
Dubai: The UAE has introduced a temporary immigration measure allowing residents whose visas expired while they were outside the country to return without needing a new entry permit. The decision, announced by authorities, is aimed at supporting thousands of expatriates affected by travel disruptions across the region.
Officials confirmed that the initiative applies to residents who were unable to return before their visas expired due to exceptional circumstances such as flight cancellations, airspace closures, and regional instability.
The temporary rule is valid from February 28 to March 31, 2026, giving affected residents a limited window to re-enter the UAE and regularise their residency status after arrival.
In a significant relief, authorities have also waived overstay fines for eligible residents, ensuring that those impacted by the crisis can return without facing financial penalties.
Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of Dubai’s General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs, said that operations across all entry points have continued smoothly despite the crisis. He emphasised that staff remained on duty across airports, land borders, and service centres to ensure seamless procedures for travellers.
He also highlighted the cooperation and discipline shown by passengers during this period, noting that it played a key role in maintaining efficient travel processes.
Authorities stressed that the UAE remains committed to treating residents with the same level of care and support as citizens, especially during challenging situations. The decision reflects the country’s flexible and humanitarian approach to immigration policies in times of crisis.
The move comes amid wider travel disruptions across the Middle East, which have impacted flight schedules and left many residents stranded outside the UAE. In response, the government has introduced a series of measures to facilitate travel, including easing entry requirements and coordinating with relevant authorities to support returning residents.
Airports and immigration centres across the UAE have continued to operate efficiently, with no major disruptions reported in passenger processing. While travel volumes have fluctuated, officials confirmed that procedures remain streamlined to handle arrivals and departures smoothly.
Residents returning under this initiative are advised to carry essential documents such as a valid passport, a copy of their expired residency visa, and Emirates ID if available. Upon arrival, they will be required to complete the necessary steps to renew or regularise their residency status through official channels.
The temporary policy highlights the UAE’s proactive approach in managing crises and ensuring the well-being of its residents. By easing travel restrictions and removing penalties, authorities aim to provide reassurance and stability to expatriates during a period of uncertainty.
As the March 31 deadline approaches, eligible residents are encouraged to make travel arrangements and take advantage of the initiative before regular visa rules are reinstated.
