The UAE has started a new phase of development with two major transport projects: the Dubai Metro Blue Line and Etihad Rail. As construction moves forward, several road closures and diversions have been announced in areas such as Sharjah, Mirdif, and Academic City. These changes are temporary, but they are important to make way for the country’s future transport system.
Both projects aim to improve the way people travel across the UAE. They are expected to reduce traffic congestion, shorten travel times, and offer better alternatives to using private cars. These upgrades will also support the UAE’s goal of becoming more sustainable and connected.
Sharjah Road Closures for Etihad Rail
In Sharjah, the construction of the Etihad Rail network has led to road closures around Mleiha Road and the Sharjah Ring Road, especially near University Bridge. These closures started on Tuesday, July 1, and will continue until Saturday, August 30.
This railway will eventually connect all seven emirates and even link the UAE with other Gulf countries. Many Sharjah residents travel daily to Dubai and other emirates for work, often spending hours in traffic. The new railway promises to ease this burden by offering faster and more efficient travel.
To support the construction, streets that connect Mleiha Road and the Sharjah Ring Road have been temporarily closed. Authorities are urging motorists to plan their trips in advance and follow the road signs for diversions.
Closures in Mirdif for Dubai Metro Blue Line
In Dubai, the construction of the new Metro Blue Line has caused traffic changes in Mirdif, one of the city’s busy residential and shopping areas. The most affected location is the roundabout intersection between 5th and 8th Streets near City Centre Mirdif.
Traffic from 5th Street to 8th Street, and vice versa, is being diverted. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has arranged for an alternative access road to help visitors reach the shopping mall. A U-turn option is also being provided for residents traveling near Ghoroob Square.
This metro line will be a major part of Dubai’s transport network. Once completed, it will connect residential communities to the airport and reduce traffic congestion by around 20 percent. The Blue Line will also be the first metro route to cross Dubai Creek, offering new routes and options to passengers.
Diversions in Academic City
Another area affected by construction is Academic City, which is home to many universities and schools. The Blue Line will connect this area to the larger metro system, which is important because over 50,000 students are expected to be based in Academic City by 2029.
Currently, 63 Street in front of the German International School has been closed in both directions. Alternative entry and exit points have been arranged, and access to Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Street remains open.
The construction work in this area is also part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which includes the goal of becoming a "20-minute city." This means that 80 percent of important services and facilities should be reachable within 20 minutes of travel for most residents.
Temporary Disruption, Long-Term Benefits
While the road closures and diversions may cause some inconvenience now, both projects are seen as important steps toward a better future. Authorities are making sure that clear signs and alternative routes are available to reduce traffic problems.
Once completed, these massive infrastructure projects will make it easier and faster for people to travel across the UAE. Residents and commuters are being asked to stay updated on traffic changes, follow official instructions, and plan their routes ahead of time.
The UAE continues to invest in public transportation, aiming to improve the quality of life and offer smarter travel options for everyone.
