The UAE Ministry of Interior warns residents against filming during emergency alerts, stating that ignoring safety instructions may result in legal action.
The United Arab Emirates has issued a stern warning to residents against filming or creating social media content during emergency alerts, stressing that personal safety must take priority over documentation. The advisory was released by the Ministry of Interior (MoI) following reports that some individuals were leaving their homes or stopping their vehicles to record videos after receiving mobile warning notifications.
Authorities clarified that emergency alerts are issued solely to protect the public and require immediate compliance. They emphasized that such notifications are not meant to be filmed or shared online, but to prompt swift action to ensure safety.
In fresh guidelines issued on Wednesday, the Ministry instructed residents to immediately move to a safe location or remain indoors when an alert is received. People are required to stay sheltered until an official “all clear” message is announced for their specific area.
“The warning is issued for your safety,” the Ministry stated, urging the public to comply strictly with instructions by heading to secure shelter and remaining there until authorities confirm it is safe.
For motorists, officials provided clear instructions. Drivers who receive an alert while on the road must not stop abruptly on highways or exit their vehicles unnecessarily. Instead, they should continue to their intended destination and seek the nearest safe shelter upon arrival. Sudden stops or roadside filming, authorities warned, could create additional hazards and disrupt traffic flow.
The Ministry underscored that failure to follow official safety directives constitutes a legal offence and may result in accountability under UAE law. Officials stressed that such measures are essential to maintaining an effective and coordinated emergency response framework.
Additionally, the Ministry reminded residents that the national emergency hotline, 999, is strictly reserved for genuine emergencies. Misuse of the hotline can hinder urgent response efforts and delay assistance for those in critical need.
Residents and visitors have been urged to seek shelter immediately during alerts, refrain from spreading rumours or unverified information on social media, and cooperate fully with authorities. Officials reiterated that public discipline and cooperation are crucial to protecting lives and ensuring national safety during emergency situations.
