Trump says the Iran conflict is effectively over and claims Tehran is ready to strike a deal, including abandoning nuclear weapons, as negotiations reportedly continue.
US President Donald Trump has declared that the conflict involving Iran has effectively been decided, insisting that Tehran is prepared to reach an agreement and abandon any pursuit of nuclear weapons. His remarks came as tensions in the region continue to draw global attention, with Washington indicating that negotiations are already underway with Iranian representatives.
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin in the Oval Office at the White House, Trump expressed confidence that the outcome of the conflict is already clear. He dismissed ongoing concerns about prolonged hostilities, saying: "This war has been won. The only one that likes to keep it going is the fake news."
Trump suggested that diplomatic progress had been made behind the scenes, hinting that Iran’s leadership had already made gestures indicating a willingness to negotiate. He stated: "Iran is going to make a deal. The new leadership gave us a significant present that showed me that we're dealing with the right people." However, he did not identify the individuals or officials representing Iran in the discussions.
Highlighting what he described as a strategic advantage for the United States, Trump said the country is in a strong bargaining position due to the scale of damage inflicted on Iranian military capabilities. According to the US President, Iran’s capacity to continue the conflict has been significantly weakened, putting pressure on Tehran to move toward diplomacy.
Trump said: "There won’t be any nuclear weapons. Iran has agreed to that. We’re in a good bargaining position. We’re way ahead of schedule and they have no navy, air force, or missile protection. Most of their launches we’ve killed."
The remarks reflect Washington’s broader position that military pressure has played a major role in shaping the direction of negotiations. Trump also confirmed that talks with Iranian representatives are ongoing, although details about the location or framework of these discussions remain unclear.
He added: "We’re in negotiations right now. Iran would like to make a deal, and who wouldn’t if you were there? Pretty much everything they have is gone."
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth reinforced the administration’s stance, emphasising the scale of military operations carried out during the conflict. He described the campaign as historically significant in terms of speed and intensity.
Hegseth stated: "Never has a modern military, been so rapidly and historically obliterated, defeated, from day one, with overwhelming firepower... that’s why we see ourselves as part of this negotiation as well. We negotiate with bombs. You have a choice, as we loiter over the top of Tehran... about your future."
His comments suggest that the US views military pressure as a central component of its diplomatic strategy. Analysts say such statements could influence both international reactions and the direction of future negotiations, particularly concerning nuclear safeguards and regional security.
Observers note that while Washington claims progress toward an agreement, Iran has not publicly confirmed the specific terms mentioned by US officials.
