WhatsApp Drops Support for Older Phones: iPhone and Android Users Affected

WhatsApp Drops Support for Older Phones: iPhone and Android Users Affected

WhatsApp will stop supporting older iPhones and Android devices, urging users to upgrade for continued access.

WhatsApp has announced a significant update that will discontinue support for several older smartphones starting May 5. This move impacts both iPhone and Android users, as the platform continues to upgrade its system requirements to enhance security, improve performance, and introduce advanced features.

Older iPhones Below iOS 15.1 to Be Phased Out

As part of the update, WhatsApp will no longer function on iPhones that cannot run iOS 15.1 or later. Devices stuck on older operating systems will gradually lose access to core services, including messaging and calling features.

Users can verify their iOS version by navigating to:
Settings > General > About > iOS Version

Affected iPhone Models Listed

The following iPhone models will no longer support the latest version of WhatsApp due to software limitations:

  •  iPhone 5
  •  iPhone 5c
  •  iPhone 5s
  •  iPhone 6
  •  iPhone 6 Plus

These devices are unable to upgrade to iOS 15.1, making them incompatible with upcoming WhatsApp updates.

Android Devices Running Older Versions Also Impacted

WhatsApp is also phasing out support for Android smartphones operating on versions older than Android 6.0. Many of these devices no longer receive updates, making them vulnerable to security risks and unable to support new app features.

The company has confirmed that starting September 8, 2026, WhatsApp will completely stop working on Android phones running versions below Android 6.0. Devices using Android 5.0 and 5.1 will lose access entirely after this date.

Reason Behind the Decision

WhatsApp, owned by Meta, regularly revises its minimum system requirements to keep up with evolving security protocols, improve app efficiency, and ensure compatibility with new technologies such as enhanced encryption. Older operating systems often lack the capability to support these advancements.

Steps Users Should Take Immediately

To avoid disruptions, affected users are advised to:

  •  Back up chats and media to avoid data loss
  •  Check for available software updates
  •  Upgrade to a newer device if their phone is no longer supported

Failing to take these steps may result in complete loss of access to messaging, calls, and other essential app features.
