Dubai continues to lead the way in smart city innovation by enhancing public transport services with cutting-edge digital connectivity. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially completed the rollout of free Wi-Fi on all intercity buses, providing passengers with uninterrupted internet access throughout their journeys to and from the emirate.
This new development benefits commuters traveling between Dubai and other emirates such as Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Ajman, and Fujairah. Whether passengers are commuting for work, managing personal errands, or simply staying in touch with family and friends, the service allows them to stay online while on the road.
Commuting with Convenience
The RTA confirmed on Wednesday, July 23, that all 259 intercity buses now offer complimentary internet access. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve the passenger experience across all modes of transport. Delivered in collaboration with telecom provider e&, the Wi-Fi upgrade is designed to support digital lifestyles and meet the expectations of today’s tech-savvy commuters.
“By equipping our intercity buses with high-speed internet, we aim to create a more productive and connected travel environment for everyone,” said an RTA spokesperson. “It reflects our ongoing commitment to smart mobility and customer satisfaction.”
Devices and Accessibility
Passengers can access the service using any internet-enabled device, including smartphones, tablets, and laptops. The system has been optimized to ensure smooth browsing, easy access to emails, and seamless video calls or streaming, depending on network load. The service is free of charge, making it a valuable feature for residents and visitors alike.
A Broader Smart Transport Network
This announcement follows a similar milestone achieved just last month. On June 17, the RTA completed the implementation of free Wi-Fi at 43 key transport and marine stations across the city. This includes central bus terminals and ferry stations that serve thousands of passengers daily.
Dubai is not new to offering digital conveniences in public infrastructure. In addition to the new intercity bus Wi-Fi, free internet is already available across all Dubai Metro stations, as well as at Dubai International Airport and Al Maktoum International Airport. These services ensure that travelers remain connected whether they’re commuting within the city, heading to the airport, or journeying between emirates.
Part of a Larger Vision
The rollout of free Wi-Fi services aligns with the broader objectives of Dubai’s Smart City strategy, which emphasizes innovation, sustainability, and seamless digital infrastructure. It also highlights the emirate’s dedication to enhancing the quality of life for residents, improving efficiency in public services, and promoting the use of public transport.
With initiatives like these, Dubai is making it easier for commuters to stay productive, informed, and entertained while on the move. Whether you're a daily commuter or an occasional traveler between emirates, free Wi-Fi on intercity buses ensures a more comfortable and connected journey.
