Abu Dhabi’s First Drone Delivery Signals Future of Smart Urban Logistics

Abu Dhabi’s First Drone Delivery Signals Future of Smart Urban Logistics

Abu Dhabi has completed its first drone parcel delivery in Khalifa City as part of a pilot project to advance smart mobility and autonomous logistics. Backed by ADIO and led by LODD and 7X, the trial marks a key step toward integrating drone technology into the emirate’s transport ecosystem.

In a significant leap toward next-generation logistics, Abu Dhabi has successfully conducted its first drone-based parcel delivery as part of a pilot project aimed at advancing smart mobility and autonomous logistics. The test, which took place in Khalifa City, marks a key milestone in the emirate’s push to integrate unmanned aerial systems into its broader transport ecosystem.

The operation was conducted using a winch-based drone delivery system that simulated the transport of a parcel from a local post office to a designated drop zone within the urban area. The project was led by aviation technology firm LODD in collaboration with logistics holding group 7X, with strategic backing from the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO).

This first-of-its-kind test in the capital highlights the growing momentum behind the use of autonomous technologies for urban delivery networks. It also reflects Abu Dhabi’s commitment to becoming a global innovation hub by investing in forward-thinking solutions that enhance infrastructure and efficiency.

Public-Private Collaboration Fuels Smart Mobility

The pilot project is part of Abu Dhabi’s wider smart mobility strategy under the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC) and supported by ADIO’s Smart and Autonomous Vehicles Industry (SAVI) cluster. Regulatory guidance and safety oversight were jointly provided by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC).

“This pilot trial reflects the strength of collaboration between the public and private sectors and represents a concrete step toward the future of smart aerial mobility in the emirate,” said Humaid Saber Al Hameli, Director of the Aviation Transport Division at ITC. “Ensuring the safety and security of our airspace remains a top priority.”

The test operation focused on verifying the technical feasibility, safety protocols, and operational readiness for drone-based logistics in urban environments. It also served as a model for how such systems could be scaled for broader public and commercial use across Abu Dhabi and the UAE.

Enabling Future-Ready Infrastructure

Omran Malek, Head of the SAVI Cluster at ADIO, noted that the successful trial is a reflection of Abu Dhabi’s long-term vision for infrastructure development. “ADIO is proud to champion the development and rollout of cutting-edge logistics technologies that strengthen Abu Dhabi’s position as a global innovation hub,” he said. “This is the kind of forward-looking investment that adds economic and strategic value to our ecosystem.”

Both LODD and 7X confirmed that they would continue working closely with regulators and government entities to refine their operational models and prepare for a more extensive rollout of drone-based services in the near future.

Rashid Al Manai, CEO of LODD, emphasized the transformative impact of drone delivery systems on modern logistics. “Autonomous drones introduce a new layer of scalability and efficiency to urban delivery networks. With a single operator able to manage multiple deliveries simultaneously, this model offers flexibility and responsiveness that traditional methods can’t match.”

Tariq Al Wahedi, Group CEO of 7X, which oversees delivery service provider EMX, echoed that sentiment. “By integrating autonomous aerial technology into EMX’s national logistics network, we are not only expanding operational reach but also supporting the UAE’s broader goals for smart mobility,” he said.

A Vision for Scalable Urban Logistics

The successful drone delivery trial is just the beginning. The pilot is the first phase of a multi-stage roadmap to roll out drone delivery services across Abu Dhabi, aligning with ongoing regulatory frameworks and infrastructure upgrades. The long-term objective is to make autonomous aerial logistics a regular feature of the city’s delivery landscape.

As urban populations grow and demand for efficient, contactless delivery solutions increases, Abu Dhabi’s investment in drone technology signals a forward-thinking approach to meeting future challenges. With strong public-private partnerships and a clear regulatory vision, the emirate is positioning itself at the forefront of autonomous air mobility in the region.
