Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi set to open this December

Set to open in December 2025 in Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District, the Zayed National Museum will honor the legacy of the UAE’s Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The museum will showcase over 300,000 years of history through rare artefacts, immersive exhibits, and interactive galleries—celebrating Emirati identity, heritage, and Sheikh Zayed’s visionary values.

The long-anticipated Zayed National Museum, a tribute to the Founding Father of the United Arab Emirates, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, is officially set to open its doors to the public in December 2025. Located in the heart of Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District, the museum will serve as a powerful symbol of national identity and pride, offering a comprehensive journey through the UAE’s rich history, culture, and future ambitions.

Dedicated to preserving and presenting Sheikh Zayed’s enduring legacy, the museum reflects the values he championed—education, unity, identity, sustainability, and humanitarianism. The project has been years in the making and will stand as the centerpiece of the Saadiyat Cultural District, a burgeoning cultural hub that already houses globally renowned institutions such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi and will soon include the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, and teamLab Phenomena.

A Legacy in Stone and Steel

Designed by the world-renowned architect Lord Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, the Zayed National Museum features a dramatic architectural style inspired by falcon wings, symbolising falconry’s deep-rooted cultural significance in Emirati heritage. The building’s five elegant steel towers, reminiscent of soaring birds in flight, are not only symbolic but also designed with sustainability and environmental efficiency in mind.

Speaking about the museum’s vision, Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, said:

“Zayed National Museum is the legacy of our Founding Father. It is more than a place of preservation; it is a promise to future generations, a beacon of our identity.”

He further emphasized that the museum will be a place of emotion, memory, and foresight, expressing Sheikh Zayed’s values and his passion for education, cultural preservation, and inclusive development.

Showcasing 300,000 Years of Human History

The museum will feature six permanent galleries spread across two levels, along with a dedicated temporary exhibition space, enabling it to host international and thematic exhibits. Together, the galleries will offer visitors the chance to explore over 300,000 years of human and regional history, using artefacts, immersive multimedia, and interactive displays.

The collection brings together archaeological finds from across the UAE, important donations, and notable international loans, offering a nuanced perspective on the country’s past and its connections to the wider world.

Among the standout exhibits are:

  • The Abu Dhabi Pearl: Believed to be one of the oldest natural pearls ever discovered, this rare gem highlights the region’s ancient connection to maritime trade and pearl diving.
  • The Blue Qur’an: A world-renowned masterpiece of Islamic calligraphy and manuscript art, this manuscript is celebrated for its historical and spiritual significance.
  • Recreation of an ancient Magan boat: Developed through collaborative research with Zayed University and NYU Abu Dhabi, this reconstructed vessel pays tribute to the UAE’s prehistoric maritime heritage and early trading civilizations.

Celebrating Archaeological and Cultural Heritage

The museum draws heavily from Sheikh Zayed’s personal passion for archaeology and history, featuring a significant number of artefacts from the Palaeolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age, and Iron Age periods. The displays will include findings from over five decades of archaeological excavations across the Emirates, such as the world’s oldest known falaj irrigation system and ancient copper mining sites.

These historical pieces not only chronicle the human journey through time in the Arabian Peninsula but also underscore Sheikh Zayed’s belief that understanding the past is key to building a meaningful future.

A Museum for All Generations

In keeping with Sheikh Zayed’s inclusive vision, the Zayed National Museum has been designed to be accessible and engaging for visitors of all ages and backgrounds, including People of Determination, young learners, and senior citizens. Through its interactive learning environments, digital exhibits, and multilingual materials, the museum aims to foster curiosity, cultural dialogue, and intergenerational knowledge sharing.

In addition, a robust programme of educational workshops, guided tours, research initiatives, and community engagement activities will be launched to ensure the museum remains a living, breathing institution that evolves with time and serves future generations.

Anchoring a Global Cultural Destination

The Zayed National Museum is not just a national landmark—it is a vital piece in the larger puzzle of positioning Abu Dhabi as a world leader in cultural innovation and heritage preservation. Its strategic placement within the Saadiyat Cultural District aligns with the emirate’s goal of transforming the island into a global cultural capital that attracts tourists, scholars, artists, and innovators from around the world.

With its blend of architectural brilliance, historical depth, and cultural relevance, the Zayed National Museum is poised to be more than just a museum—it is set to become a symbol of national pride and a global point of reference for cultural excellence.
